Alcohol and Sexual Duration: Why It Is a Bad Crutch
Why alcohol can seem like a solution for PE and why it actually blocks the development of a stable skill for managing arousal.
Updated:
Many men notice the same thing: have a couple of drinks and sex lasts longer. That is not an illusion. Alcohol really does slow nerve conduction, dull sensitivity, and lower anxiety. The effect is real. The problem is the price: awareness drops, contact with the body gets weaker, and erection quality goes down as the dose rises. Most importantly, no skill is built. Remove the alcohol and you return to the same old pattern. That is not arousal management. It is chemical dulling.
In short
- ✓Alcohol lowers anxiety and dulls sensitivity. The effect is real, but it is not a skill.
- ✓As the dose rises, erection quality often falls. One symptom gets softened while another problem is created.
- ✓Under alcohol, awareness and contact with the body go down, so PONR warning signs are noticed worse, not better.
- ✓Relying on alcohol creates psychological dependence: "I cannot do this sober."
- ✓Sober management through breathing and the Bank is what works in any situation, with any partner, every time.
What alcohol does to the body and to the Bank
Alcohol acts on the central nervous system as a depressant. It slows nerve conduction, lowers anxiety through GABA-related mechanisms, and dulls peripheral sensitivity. That is why a man under alcohol feels less sharpness of sensation and less fear of being judged.
In terms of the Bank, alcohol lowers the temperature of sensation and partly lowers inflow because anxiety is no longer driving the sympathetic system as hard. The Bank fills more slowly. It can feel like management.
But it is not management. It is dulling. A man does not notice the warning signs of PONR earlier. He notices them later, or not at all. Contact with the body is reduced. Exhale and relaxation, which should become conscious skill, are not being trained because chemistry is doing the job instead.
When alcohol creates a new problem
Alcohol is dose-dependent. One or two drinks may lower anxiety. Three or four often start lowering erection quality, because the depressive effect on vessels and the nervous system outweighs the anti-anxiety benefit. A man tries to solve PE and gets erection trouble as a side effect.
The second effect is psychological dependence. After a few "successful" experiences with alcohol, the brain fixes the link: drunk means I can, sober means I cannot. Anxiety during sober sex rises. The pattern becomes stronger.
The third effect is lack of learning. The body under alcohol is not training any new skill. It is simply functioning in chemically altered conditions. Take the alcohol away and you are back at zero. Skill is not built chemically.
What to use instead of alcohol: tools for lowering anxiety
Anxiety before sex is real. Alcohol lowers it, but at the cost of awareness. There are tools that lower anxiety through physiology without dulling contact with the body.
The first is breathing before sex. Five minutes of slow belly breathing activate the parasympathetic system and reduce sympathetic tone. In effect it calms the body, but it does so through your own nervous system and without a loss of awareness.
The second is lowering the stakes of the encounter. "I am not proving myself, I am training." That mental frame reduces fear of being judged. It is not self-hypnosis. It is a more realistic definition of the task.
The third is regular OM. The more repetitions you have in safe conditions, the lower your baseline anxiety becomes during sex. Skill brings calm not because "I am great," but because "I know what to do."
Comparing two experiences honestly
Try an honest comparison: sex with alcohol versus sober sex after 10 to 15 days of attentive OM. Compare not only duration but the quality of contact, the clarity of awareness, and the feeling of presence.
Most men who go through the route say that sober sex with skill is a different experience. Not "I endured longer," but "I was actually there." Alcohol gives duration through dulling. Skill gives duration through presence.
Important note: The Zhurov Method is an educational skill-training system, not a medical treatment. We do not replace doctors. If you have acute physical pain, inflammation, or other medical symptoms, start with a urologist. That is a normal adult step, and you can train attention management and relaxation in parallel.
First step for 7 days
- •Try one sexual experience completely sober, with the intention to observe rather than prove anything. Write down what was harder and what changed in your body.
- •Compare two states: how your breathing and bodily contact change with alcohol and without it. This builds discrimination.
- •If alcohol is currently a regular crutch, try gradually lowering the dose while building breathing skill as a replacement.
- •Ask yourself: "If I remove alcohol, what exactly am I afraid of?" The answer will point to the fear you actually need to address.
Common questions
Is one or two drinks really a problem?
As a rare one-off, not necessarily. The problem begins when it becomes a strategy: "Without alcohol I cannot do it." Then dependence forms and the pattern "sober means I will fail" gets stronger.
Alcohol improved my erection. How can that happen?
In anxiety-driven PE, a small dose of alcohol can temporarily reduce anxiety enough to improve erection too. But with higher doses or regular reliance, the effect reverses and the depressive action on vessels and the nervous system starts weakening erection.
Is marijuana or CBD better than alcohol?
It is the same class of question: chemical state change versus skill. The effects and risks are different, but the principle is the same. Remove the substance and the old pattern returns. Skill works without chemistry.
Is this a medical treatment?
